“Stir your Coffee” a V60 recipe

“Stir your Coffee” a V60 recipe – a recipe closing 2016 with everything I’ve learned about V60 brewing in 2016. I feel like in the last 7 years of (what we call speciality) coffee, it’s been 2016 that I’ve made the most progress. For that I have to thank everyone I’ve come into contact with in real life and online.

disclaimer: this recipe is for no particular coffee, water or place; but a set of guidelines to help your brewing. I welcome feedback.

stir – can be defined as: “move a spoon or other implement round and round in (a liquid or other substance) in order to mix it thoroughly.”

  • Grind some beans

18g of beans with a coarseness resembling fine white sand.

  • Boil some water

The lazy way – fill your goose neck with water to boil, pour this into your electric kettle.

  • Get the V60 ready

Brew into a cup or a vessel, place either on scale, followed by Hario V60. Take Hario V60 Paper and Mountain Fold as instructions demonstrate, place folded paper in V60.

  • Heat Cup/Vessel, V60 and Goose Neck Kettle (all in one).

Pour water from Electric Kettle into Goose Neck Kettle say about 150ml, replace goose neck lid. This has many purposes.

a) pre-heating the goose neck.
b) wetting the papers.
c) pre-heating the cup/vessel.
d) pre-heating the V60.

Pouring around the outside of the V60 ensure all of the paper is wet, and all of your water is gone from the goose neck kettle.

Empty vessel/mug of water. Pour enough water into heated Goose Neck Kettle from Electric Kettle.

  • The Pour

With everything re-assembled.
Take coffee ground and insert into V60.
Tare your scales.

0g/0 sec – Pour 50g of water to wet the coffee bed, trying your hardest to wet all of the ground, and wait 30 seconds.

Admire & enjoy the bloom.

50g/30 sec – Pour 150g of water in a circular motion around the V60 not at the edge, extra points if you can pour mini circles as you also pour a big circle. Take Bamboo Stick and stir 2/3 times to start vortex*.

Watch vortex.

200g/120 sec – Pour 100g of water in a circular motion around the V60 not at the edge, again extra points if you can pour mini circles as you also pour a big circle. Take Bamboo Stick and stir 1 time to re-start vortex*.

Watch vortex.

300g/180 sec – stop + remove V60.

  • Stir the coffee in the cup or vessel.

This is going to make your coffee much more balanced as you drink it.

Drink the coffee.

*use a tiny amount of water to wash any ground on the stirrer after stir back into V60.

question: does it have to be a bamboo stick? // answer: yes it has to be a magic bamboo stick. seriously though, not metal.
